Your Vela chair may qualify for VAT relief, meaning eligible customers can purchase it without paying the standard 20% VAT.Whether VAT relief applies depends on who is purchasing the chair, who will be using it, and where it will be used.

When VAT relief may apply

You may be eligible for VAT relief if:

  • The chair is purchased by or for a person with a long-term illness or disability and is for their personal or domestic use.
  • The chair is supplied for an eligible individual living in supported living accommodation or a care home, where it is intended for an individual’s personal use.
  • The chair is purchased on behalf of an eligible individual by a family member, carer, employer, charity or other organisation for their personal use.

When VAT relief does not normally apply

VAT relief is generally not available where the chair is:

  • Purchased for general use by multiple people.
  • Intended for communal areas in care homes, hospitals, clinics or other healthcare settings.
  • Bought by a business, school, college, university or other organisation for shared use by staff, students or residents.
  • Used as part of a general equipment pool rather than being supplied for one eligible individual.

Schools, workplaces and care settings

A VELA chair may still qualify for VAT relief when supplied to a school, workplace, care home or other organisation if it is specifically provided for the personal use of a named individual who has a qualifying disability or long-term medical condition. If the chair will be shared between several users, VAT relief will not normally apply.

How to claim VAT relief

If you are eligible, completing a simple VAT Relief Declaration is usually all that is required. No doctor's letter or medical certificate is normally needed, although you must meet HMRC's eligibility criteria. What is a VELA Chair?

A VELA Chair is a stable, height-adjustable activity chair featuring a central wheel lock that enables the user to move around and carry out everyday activities while seated.

The chair brings together ergonomic seating, controlled mobility, and safety functions to support independence at home, at work, in educational environments, and during rehabilitation.

Can I use a VELA chair on my carpet?

VELA Chairs are designed to work well on hard floors such as wood, tiles, and linoleum. However, using these chairs on carpets can be more challenging, depending on the type of carpet and your strength and mobility.
 
Hard Flooring: VELA chairs move easily on surfaces like wood, tiles, and linoleum.
Carpets: Movement on carpets varies. Thick or loose carpets make it harder to move the chair. We recommend removing loose rugs to ensure safe and easy mobility.
Wall-to-Wall Carpeting: This type of carpet can be easier to navigate because it’s attached to the floor and has no edges. However, moving the chair on carpets requires more physical strength due to its softer surface.

How often should I charge my VELA Tango chair?

Charge the chair every day. We recommend charging the chair when you’re not using it, such as overnight. Do not cover the charger while charging!

Note: Charging VELA chairs with Power Wheels
The battery lasts for approximately one day of normal use* for users weighing up to 100 kg. Charge the battery every evening/night.
Extended use, higher user weight, or surfaces with increased friction such as carpets and soft flooring (not recommended) will increase battery consumption. The electric drive is designed to assist in “walking the chair” and is not intended as a replacement for a powered wheelchair.
*Alternating use between electric drive and “walking the chair”, with an activity level corresponding to the level prior to the need for electric drive. Watch the charging instructions here.

What challenges does a VELA Chair help solve?


The chair supports daily activities such as cooking, household tasks, and personal care by reducing fatigue and lowering the risk of falls. This is achieved by providing secure seating, a lockable wheel system, and adjustable seat height tailored to the task.

It also minimises physical strain during transfers and reaching, as the user can adjust the seat height, move close to work surfaces, and “walk” the chair between rooms instead of standing or being assisted.

What is the difference between a chair with a gas lift and an electric lift?

One of the essential functions of our chairs is height adjustment. You get the most out of your VELA Chair when you can change your sitting height according to your activities. Therefore, you must choose the height adjustment according to which type you can manage. Choose between:

Electric lift, if you lack the strength to use your legs whenever you need to change the seat height, or you can’t get up and sit down without assistance.

Gas lift, if you have the leg strength to change your seat height, every time you need to sit differently, and you don’t need help getting up or sitting down.
