Combining smooth mobility, adjustable height and a central braking system, VELA Chairs provide something very different from either a conventional office chair or a wheelchair.

What Is a VELA Chair?
A VELA Chair sits somewhere between supportive seating and a mobility aid.
Unlike a conventional office chair, it has a specially designed stable base, 100mm smooth rolling wheels and a central braking system.
Users can propel or “walk” the VELA Chair using their feet while remaining seated.
The chair can then be locked securely when the user reaches the activity they want to complete.
This combination means that one chair can help support both:
MOVEMENT and ACTIVITY.
The aim isn’t simply to help somebody sit.
It’s to help them KEEP DOING everyday activities at home idenpendatly.
What Makes a VELA Chair Different?
Central Brake
Stability When You Need It.
One of the most distinctive features of a VELA Chair is its central braking system. Using the brake locks the chair’s wheels and creates a stable seated base. This can provide additional support when:
- getting into the chair
- standing from the chair
- reaching
- preparing food
- working at a surface
- getting dressed
- completing hobbies
- carrying out everyday activities
The combination of the brake and supportive armrests can give the user greater confidence when completing activities from the chair.
Move While Remaining Seated
KEEP MOVING.
VELA Chairs use four smooth-running wheels with space around the base for the user’s feet. This allows the user to move the chair using their feet while remaining seated.
Instead of: Stand → Walk → Sit
The user may be able to: Stay seated and move.
At home, that might mean Fridge → Worktop → Sink → Table.
At work: Desk → Storage → Printer → Meeting Area
Reducing unnecessary standing and transfers can help make everyday activities less demanding.
Adjustable Height
Meet the Activity at the Right Height.
Not everything happens at the same height.
A dining table is different from a kitchen worktop. A desk is different from a cupboard. A bed is different from a bathroom basin.
VELA Chairs can be adjusted so the user can position themselves appropriately for different activities.
Depending on the model, height adjustment can be:
Manual using a gas lift or Electric using powered adjustment at the touch of a button.
For someone with limited strength, balance or endurance, electric height adjustment can provide significantly more flexibility throughout the day.
Supportive Seating
Built Around the Person Sitting in It.
A specialist chair should not expect the user to adapt to it. The chair should adapt to the user.
VELA Chairs can be configured using different:
- seat sizes & designs
- backrest sizes & designs
- armrests
- height ranges
- upholstery
- controls
- accessories
This allows the chair to be considered around the individual’s: body, dimensions, abilities, support requirements, environment, and everyday activities.
Who Could Benefit from a VELA Chair?
A VELA Chair may be worth exploring where everyday activity is being affected by difficulties with:
- standing for longer periods
- reduced balance
- reduced leg strength
- fatigue
- reduced endurance
- repeatedly sitting and standing
- transfers
- reaching safely
- working at different heights
- maintaining a stable seated position
- completing daily activities independently
People with a wide variety of mobility and functional requirements use VELA Chairs. Rather than beginning with a diagnosis, we prefer to begin with a much simpler question:
What do you want to keep doing?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Vela Chair?
A VELA Chair is a stable, height-adjustable indoor mobility chair with a central braking system.
It combines supportive seating with controlled indoor mobility, allowing appropriate users to move around and complete everyday activities while seated.
Is a VELA Chair a wheelchair?
No, VELA Chairs are primarily designed to prevent falls and support individuals doing everyday activities. Many users propel the chair using their feet while remaining seated.
Power Wheels are also available for users who require additional assistance with indoor movement. They are not intended as a replacement for a powered wheelchair.
Is a VELA Chair an office chair?
Not in the conventional sense. VELA Chairs provide ergonomic seating but incorporate specialist features including:
- directionally stable wheels
- a non-rotating stable base configuration
- central wheel braking
- seated mobility
- specialist height adjustment
These features make VELA very different from a normal office task chair.
Who are VELA Chairs designed for?
VELA Chairs may benefit people whose everyday activities are affected by reduced:
- mobility
- strength
- balance
- endurance
or who require additional stability and support while completing indoor activities. Individual suitability varies, which is why we recommend discussing your requirements and experiencing the chair.
What is the difference between manual and electric height adjustment?
Manual models use a gas lift.
Electric models allow the user to change height using powered controls.
Electric adjustment can be particularly valuable where the individual does not have sufficient strength to repeatedly operate manual height adjustment or where they require assistance changing working height.
What’s the difference between the VELA Tango 700 and 700E?
Tango 700
Manual gas-lift height adjustment.
Tango 700E
Electric-powered height adjustment.
Otherwise, both can provide the fundamental VELA benefits of stability, mobility, supportive seating and individual configuration.
What are Power Wheels?
VELA Power Wheels provide electrically powered assistance when moving the chair.
They may be useful for someone who can no longer comfortably propel the chair using their feet for all of their everyday activities.
Power Wheels are intended to assist seated movement rather than replace a powered wheelchair.
Can VELA help with standing up?
Electric height adjustment can raise the user’s starting seated height before standing.
VELA also offers a specialist Tango 700E Sit-to-Stand configuration with additional powered assistance.
Individual suitability should always be considered.
Are VELA Chairs suitable for higher user weights?
Yes. VELA’s specialist Tango 300 range includes models with maximum weight capacities of 200kg and 300kg.
Speak to us so the appropriate model and specification can be considered.
Can the chair be customised?
Yes. VELA Chairs can be configured with different seats, backrests, armrests, accessories, height ranges and upholstery options.
The chair is generally built around the individual’s requirements rather than supplied as one universal configuration.
Can I try a VELA Chair before buying one?
Yes. Healthy Home & Office offers VELA demonstration opportunities. We strongly recommend experiencing the chair where possible before deciding on the final configuration.
How much does a VELA Chair cost?
The price depends on:
- model
- seat
- backrest
- height adjustment
- accessories
- powered functions
- individual configuration
Rather than providing one generic price for every chair, speak to us about your requirements, and we can provide an appropriate quotation.
