What is a DSE Workstation Assessment?
A DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment is a review of how a workstation is set up — including the desk, chair, monitor, keyboard, mouse, lighting, and working environment.
The goal is to reduce the risks of:
- Back and neck pain
- Shoulder and wrist strain
- Eye discomfort and fatigue
- Poor posture and productivity loss
The law applies to anyone who uses screens daily for continuous periods of an hour or more — including home workers and hot-desking users.
When Are DSE Assessments Required?
Employers must carry out a DSE assessment:
- When a new employee starts
- When a new workstation is set up
- When a workstation layout changes
- If an employee reports discomfort or pain
- Periodically, to keep setups safe and compliant
Even if your employees work from home or share desks, assessments must still be done. A basic DSE assessment should be repeated each time a user changes workstations.

What’s Covered in a Workstation Assessment?
During a DSE assessment, we review:

Software alone is not a full assessment.
